Frans Kasl Projects | Richard Wathen

“Vessels”

30th September – 11th November 2023
By appointment

We are pleased to announce the second solo exhibition of Richard Wathen at our gallery in Eindhoven with paintings and works on paper.

The works in this show consist of watercolours and oil paintings made in the last six months.

The works resemble ‘portraits’ and there is a clear nod to historic portraiture, but there are no sitters. There are references to Renaissance portraits, film stills, and some of the paintings present as a mugshot or passport photo. The figures are derived from drawings and there is a clear desire to leave the viewer uncertain as to the age and gender of each protagonist. Most works in the show are titled with gender neutral names further adding to the ambiguity They look beyond the viewer, lost in their own fragile psychology, with skin, often in shades of blue or green reminding us they are vessels for colour and surface.

Recent solo Exhibitions include ‘New eyes every time’ MOSTYN Wales, UK, ‘Futures and Pasts’ Atlas House, UK. His work has been included in Group shows at Salon 94, Max Wigram gallery, Blum and Poe, Hauser and Wirth and Galarie Martin Janda amongst others.

Richard Wathen (b. 1971, London, UK) completed his masters in fine Art. At Chelsea School of art in 1996. He lives and works in Suffolk UK.
